The figure of the meditating Buddha set
within the background of mother Earth,
symbolizes that the eternal truths on
the path of Buddhism will guide and
enlighten everybody in this world. The
sign of infinity in red is also the
Ouroboros and it reinforces the endless
nature of the universe. Within the upper
loop is the yellow flame of
enlightenment with eight rays that emit
endlessly in every direction. These are
likened to the eight spokes of The
Dharmachakra or the Wheel of Dharma, a
common Buddhist symbol and represent the
'Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism'.
The world is full of desires and trying
to fulfill these desires one gets sucked
into the cycle of life and death or
rather the cause and effect of ' Karma'.
Complete freedom from this cyclical
renewal and destruction is attaining
'Nirvana' or 'Spiritual Enlightenment'.
(In the Sanskrit word Nirvana – 'Ni'
means negation or without and 'Vana'
means weaving or craving).
In India and in Buddhism the symbol of
Lotus is of primary importance. It refers
to the complete purification of body,
speech and mind, and the blossoming of
wholesome deeds in liberation. The roots
of a lotus are in the mud, the stem grows
up through the water, and the heavily
scented flower lies above the water,
basking in the sunlight. This pattern of
growth signifies the progress of the soul
from the primeval mud of materialism,
through the waters of experience, and into
the bright sunshine of enlightenment.
Aspects that are covered by this symbol
are, growing from the mud (sanmsara),
appearing clean on the surface
(purification), and producing a beautiful
flower (enlightenment). The four corners
of the card are occupied with four
different coloured lotuses that are
coupled with the triangles showing the
stable four elements of Air, Water, Earth
and Fire.
Symbols and colours on the World card:
The Triangles represent the Four elements
of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.
The Wyrm Ouroboros or the symbol of
Infinity. Red to signify passion and
energy.
The World / Earth.
The two hands' gesture refers to the
Turning the Wheel of Dharma while in
meditation. The gesture of the right hand
stands for turning the wheel of Dharma,
while that of the left hand symbolizes
meditation.
The open palm blesses everyone who seeks
the path of Buddhism or enlightenment.

The 21st card of the Major Arcana, The
World signifies completion and the end of
The Fool's journey.
Spiritual Interpretation:
The most subtle and primary meaning that
is put forward by this card is of
'infinity' and 'continuity'. Destruction
that assures renewal; Life that will come
after Death; Putting one's self First and
Last in the cosmic order; viewing the
macro and micro aspects of existence from
the 'Outside' so that it gives you the
'Inside' perspective.
Practical Interpretation:
This card gives the message that 'he
World' is yours finally! It talks about
completing the tasks at hand and of the
world (people) appreciating your effort
and giving you recognition that your
success demands. It talks about rewards in
terms of health and wealth. It indicates
travel and moving places and a sense of
achievement that fulfills the complete
picture in the world of your dreams.
Reversed Meaning:
There is stagnation and disappointment
right now and this imbalance can be
corrected by putting in more energy and
effort. The inability to accept delay may
leave one dissatisfied and by being
patient time will unfold the success you
crave for. It means you are almost there,
don't give up but put in more of right
